Fetal Distress Monitor

Our device will help nurses clean, cut, and extract a blood sample from the fetal scalp. To accomplish this, we created a minimally invasive system that consists of three main components: a suction mechanism, a cleaning mechanism, and a pushable and twistable knob. We included the suction mechanism to ensure that the device is properly guided and secured over the sampling area. Our device operates with two functions: the twisting and the pushing of the knob. The twisting of the knob directly translates to the twisting of the cleaning platform which is used to remove waste from the fetal scalp. Pushing the knob controls the ejection and retraction of the lancet and the capillary tube. After the sampling area is clean, the knob is pushed to elicit the lancet and capillary tube. The lancet creates a 2mm incision on the scalp and the capillary tube collects a 50 microliter blood sample. This automated process will allow for the testing of blood in under 5 minutes.
